WHO WE ARE
Pittsburgh Human Rights City Alliance (HRCA) is a grassroots network of groups and individuals committed to protecting and promoting human rights for all people in our region. We work to transform social, cultural, economic, and political conditions so that everyone can live in dignity and justice.
WHAT WE DO
We support movement-building for human rights by:
- Promoting interpersonal and inter-generational learning
- Expanding local knowledge of and support for human rights and international law
- Deepening inter-organizational communication and cooperation
- Supporting democratic skills-building and community capacity for democratic engagement
- Advancing leadership development, particularly among youth
- Expanding ties to activists in communities outside the city of Pittsburgh
WHAT WE BELIEVE
- Human rights is a time-tested language that builds unity and solidarity across diverse groups of people and a tool for building the power of oppressed groups to transform unjust social relations
- Realizing human rights in every city and community is essential to protecting democracy and ensuring justice, peace, and ecological sustainability
- We embrace the Black Radical Tradition’s notion of human rights as a strategy based in the needs and aspirations of the oppressed
- Human rights struggle requires us to build intersectional movements at all levels of society, from global to local
- Realizing our rights requires that we work locally and across localities to support real democracy and accountability and promote human rights-based governance in our communities
